|This article is about the Angler Fish. For the sick version, see Sick Angler Fish.|
Description[edit | edit source]
The Angler fish are bony, predatorial fish named for their characteristic mode of predation, in which a bioluminescent fleshy growth from the fish's head (the esca or illicium) acts as a lure. The angler fish is able to distend both its jaw and its stomach, since its bones are thin and flexible, to enormous size, allowing it to swallow prey up to twice as large as its entire body. In The Living Infinite, it's a constant victim of the parasitizing done by Baby Lampreys, with some Angler fish being parasitized by upwards to half a dozen of them.
Behavior[edit | edit source]
Boasting extremely high health and high DPS, this enemy can be a dangerous foe. When it spots a submarine, it will attempt to chase it and bite it. However, this creature is very slow and can be easily outrun by allocating 2 or more power units to the Engine Console, depending on the Submarine you are using. Additionally, it can be detected easily due to his bioluminescent lure and its large size makes it prone to getting stuck if you find a hole big enough to fit your submarine but not big enough for the angler fish.
Tactics[edit | edit source]
The most common strategy is increasing the submarine's speed to avoid it entirely. It's also possible to keep it a bay by using torpedoes, however, that's not advisable due to their limited quantity. With the Requin, you need 3 power units allocated to engines to outrun it, but experienced gunners may be able to keep it at bay without needing to use torpedoes. Its biggest threat is when it is chasing you from below, which can be very problematic in tight spaces and will often cause heavy damage to the Hull should the Angler Fish not be taken care of very quickly.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
A much larger version of the Angler Fish, known as The Lost Light, was a placeholder boss in the Dark Depths.
